School Tax Relief Program to Help Homeowners
Q. What is STAR?
A. STAR is New York State's School Tax Relief Program that includes a school property tax rebate program and a partial property tax exemption from school taxes. All New Yorkers who own and live in their home - whether it's a condominium, cooperative apartment, manufactured home, farm dwelling, apartment building or mixed-use property - are eligible for the STAR exemption on their primary residence.
Q. How do I get my STAR exemption?
A. You must file a STAR application form with your local assessor. Further information can be found on the website of the New York State Office of Real Property Services (ORPS) or by calling toll-free (1-888-697-8275). Q. Is there a deadline by which I must file the application form?
A. Yes. In the four towns listed above, the deadline is typically March 1 of each year.
