Information Technology and Digital Literacy

Information Technology and Digital Literacy Update (Fall/Winter 2009)

The Strategic Intents (5-year goals) for Information Technology and Digital Literacy are:

  • By June 2013, 95% of students in grades 5, 8 and 12 will meet or exceed the established standards in the district adopted technology proficiency assessment
  • By June 2013, 100% of student records will be available in electronic format to all stakeholders.
  • By June 2010, the district technology plan will be reviewed and made current and we will have in place a process to keep it current.

This fall and winter, the Technology and Digital Literacy Action Team and working groups have been hard at work on various action plans within the overall ESM Strategic Plan. "Action plans" are specific tasks that generally are accomplished in a year.

Some of the highlights so far in 2009-2010 include:

  • Drafting a set of student technology standards for review. These standards will provide guidelines by grade for the types of skills students should have with regard to technology
  • Implementing "SchoolMessenger" our new notification system for school closings and delays.
  • Implementing our new student management system "SchoolTool." This new system will help provide more and better information to teachers so they can work with their students.
  • Beginning work on our three-year technology plan (due in May 2010). Our three-year technology plan provides a framework for our ESM technology initiatives.
  • Looking at what technology tools we are not using but could be using, and how they might help students.

Work that will continue later in the winter and spring of 2010 includes:

  • Developing an online "parent portal" where parents can review their child's grades and stay in touch with teachers.
  • Reviewing and updating our training opportunities for our staff so that they might better work with our students.
  • Investigating a student technology assessment tool to see if our students are meeting technology standards

We are interested in any participation from students and parents. If you'd like to know more, please contact Kieran O'Connor at (315) 434-3008 or koconnor@esmschools.org or Tim Patterson at (315) 434-3050 or tpatterson@esmschools.org.
