Senior Awards & Top 10: The Senior Achievement Awards were held with 128 students earning 242 awards and a whole lot of scholarship $. Congrats to the top 10 seniors in the Class of 2019: Valedictorian Nolan Penoyer (who was also appointed to the US Air Force Academy), Salutatorian Nicholas Federico and (alphabetically) Sydney Carnival, Holly Carr, Lucas Grabowski, Nicholas Jones, Julia Perrotta, Margaret Peterson, Alexis Stone and Ethan Thomas!
Student Participate & Volunteer at Special Olympics ESM had 65 students participate in the Special Olympics Track and Field competition! ESM’s Culinary, Cosmetology and Early Childhood Education students volunteered, gave out free sno-cones & cotton candy & also painted faces for children. Our students and staff participated as well as volunteered at the Special Olympics Track and Field event. Our culinary students in Future Chefs of America volunteered for the 10th year, serving hundreds of sticks of cotton candy & sno-cones for free. ESM’s Cosmetology and Early Childhood Education students painted faces. These students raise fun ds throughout the year so they can offer these items to Special Olympics participants for free.
Ashleigh Wilson Receives Secondary Administrator Award: Ashleigh Wilson was honored with the Secondary Administrator of the Year! This award by the New York Library Assoc. Section of School Librarians recognizes a secondary or district administrator who has been responsible for initiation, maintenance, and/or the improvement of a secondary school library/literacy program in a New York State school district during the past 3-5 years. Ashleigh was honored with a plaque acknowledging her support of the school library/literacy program at the SSL Spring Conference.

Masterminds Earn 2nd Place: Congrats to the ESM Central High School Masterminds Club! Students placed second at the Central NY regional competition. MasterMinds is a quiz bowl-style academic competition for high school students. Very thankful to Maureen Gould and Matthew Kissling as well the advisors.
ESM Bestows Town of Manlius PD with a Partnership Award: For their exemplary services, and the commitment that distinguishes this long standing relationship, ESM honored the Town of Manlius Police Dept. with a Partnership for Learning Recognition Award. This close-working relationship has contributed significantly to the safety and security of ESM's students, staff and the entire District. From our School Information Resource Officers’ (SIROs) to participation in the East Onondaga Critical Response Committee, the partnership is invaluable.
ESE Chess Team Earns 2nd Place in Tournament: This year East Syracuse Elementary School had its first chess team. Students competed in tournaments sponsored by Syracuse Chess, an association created to promote the game of chess in Central New York. ESE also hosted a tournament June 2 where the ESE team earned second place. Congrats to students Kaden Bailey, Dominick Simone, Alex Locke, Seamus DeSandre, Gus Gallery, Jude Gallery, Lucy Gallery, Max Ninno, Emma Tackman, Ian DeSandre, Lawrence Martin, Dominick Ninno and Nathaniel Bickom. The team is coached by Anton Ninno and ESE teacher Karen Ristau.
Rocket Challenge Team Earns Design Award: Four ESM students earned the Best Design Junior (Gr. 4-8) Division Award at the CNY Rocket Team Challenge. The team was comprised of Pine Grove students Jordan Coolbeth and Abbey Rode and Woodland students Emma Wilson-Hefti and Reese Rode. Fremont also had a team participating! Nearly 500 students turned out June 1 for the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology's (MOST) 17th annual Central New York (CNY) Rocket Team Challenge held at Syracuse University's Skytop Field. Teams competed on launch trajectory, rocketry knowledge, launch performance, and other criteria.
Environmental Summit Presentation Winner: Global Environment classes from local high schools presented their research projects at SUNY ESF's Environmental Summit. Congrats to Abigail Herrington, who was the Presentation Winner for Pollution Remediation and Alternative Energy.
ESM Spartan Garage Car Show Date Clarification: ESM Spartan Garage’s 14th Annual Spring Cruise-in/Car Show is Saturday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the ESM Central High School parking lot featuring cars, food, raffles and entertainment. Please note that this date was incorrect in the printed ESM Bulletin mailed to homes. Students who participated in this year’s 1955 Ford Thunderbird restoration will be available to talk about the project. Raffle tickets for the car will also be available. ESM Carpentry Can Build YOUR House or Addition; Open House June 12: The ESM Carpentry program is accepting applications for new homes or an addition to be built during the 2019-2020 school year. Projects must be within the ESM school district. Homeowners are responsible for the cost of materials and any necessary outside contracting. Students provide free labor and require a safe learning environment. The students will host an open house on Wednesday, June 12 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 8498 Poolsbrook Rd. where they built a 600 square-foot master bedroom addition this year. Students will be on site from 12:45-3 p.m. Visitors can view the project and ask questions about their own potential projects.
Pine Grove Art & Food: Pine Grove Student Council is partnering with our Art Department for a fun night on 6/19! Please come and join us at Pine Grove from 5-7 to experience the beautiful artwork of our 6-8 students and head to Trappers II in Minoa before or after to benefit our student council. OCC Advantage “Friendraiser” Stop by for a “friendraiser” at the 3rd annual OCC Advantage Summer Celebration Thursday, June 13 from 5-7 p.m. at Local 315 Brewing Company in Warners. ESM participates in the OCC Advantage program where eligible CHS grads have the opportunity to attend Onondaga Community College tuition-free. Proceeds will benefit the program. The event will feature a food truck rodeo, music by The Sheridans, raffle baskets and beverage discounts as well as Gannon ice cream. Tickets are $10/advance and $15 at the door. Nominations for Wall of Distinction The ESM Education Foundation (ESMEF) is accepting nominations for the ESM Wall of Distinction to recognize distinguished alumni, staff and community members of the ESM School District who serve as role models for today’s students and demonstrate the importance of making a contribution to our society, our community or their field of work. Nomination deadline is Sept. 15, 2019. That sounds like it is a long way off, but consider doing it before the end of the school year or during the summer! Eligibility criteria for nomination and selection include: excellence in his/her profession, outstanding service to his/her community (local, regional or national level) and/or outstanding contributions to humanity (local, regional or national level). The Wall of Distinction is sponsored by the ESM Education Foundation, which will host the induction ceremony in 2020 and present commemorative display plaques to the honorees and to the school district.
